How to Make Fruit More Tempting to Your Kids

Getting your kids to eat more fruit and vegetables can sometimes be a real struggle. Fruit is naturally sweet so it is perhaps more appealing than vegetables but sometimes kids simply refuse to eat healthy food. We all know that fruit and vegetables are necessary for good health, so how can we make fruit more tempting to our kids?

First of all, remember that kids love foods which look appealing. A pile of green mush might taste delicious but your kids are not going to want to taste it. Make a smiley face out of yogurt and chopped fruit and that will make them smile and want to eat it. You can make food fun because fun food is tempting food, even when you use healthy ingredients to make it.

Canned and Frozen Fruit

Fruit does not have to be fresh and canned or frozen fruit can be a great option. Frozen fruit is flash frozen when it is perfectly ripe, which means the nutrients are preserved and retained.

The longer fresh fruit is off the vine, the fewer nutrients it retains, making frozen fruit a healthier option. Fruit sold in stores is ripened after it is picked, so it is fair to say that frozen fruit usually contains more nutrients.

You can make frozen fruit tempting to your kids by thawing it and using it to top a cheesecake. You can also combine sugar free jello with thawed fruit or chopped fresh fruit to make a healthy and colorful dessert.

Canned fruit is healthy as long as it is packed in fruit juice, rather than sugar syrup, and you can use it to make smoothies, milkshakes or add it to breakfast cereals. Make foods out of fruit which look appetizing and your kids might be tempted to sample them, even if they are fussy about trying new things.

Dried Fruit and Fruit Juice

Dried fruit is convenient but because a lot of the water has been removed it is higher in calories than fresh, frozen or canned fruit. If your kids are young, dried fruit might present a choking risk so cut it into small pieces. Fruit juice is another option and you can serve it as it is or mix it with lemonade. Try to serve unsweetened fruit juice because it already contains natural fruit sugars.

Recipe for a Healthy Fruit Smoothie

Fruit smoothies are attractive to kids because they are colorful and taste delicious. You can use any soft fruits to make smoothie recipes.

The following recipe makes two portions of fruit smoothie and the honey and vanilla give the smoothie a wonderful flavor. You can use regular yogurt or even milk instead of the frozen yogurt if you prefer.

What you will need:

1 cup frozen yogurt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 chopped banana
8 frozen strawberries
1/2 teaspoon honey

How to make it:

Add all the ingredients to a blender and puree the smoothie for a minute on a high speed until everything is well mixed and the smoothie is frothy. Serve immediately.
